Backpacking Trips

Each year the Alpine Club takes several trips into the vast backcountry of Colorado and explores the rugged landscape carrying everything on our backs.

Backpacking Colorado is one of the best ways to see beautiful landscapes well away from the busy cities and other human traffic.

These trips are a favorite amongst all types of outdoor enthusiasts as you are able to venture deep into the woods.

What Happens on the Trip?

Trips usually are one or two nights and we backpack in as far as the group is willing. The groups tend to be anywhere from 7-14 people in size with at least two officers on the trip.

Expect to see all types of weather as it can snow year-around in the Colorado highcountry. Bring warm clothing and also have clothing for warm temperatures. The Alpine Club provides backpacks, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, tents, first-aid kits, water purifiers, and cooking utensils along with meals.

Favorite Spots

The best spot to backpack that is close to DU (1.5-2 hours) is the Lost Creek Wilderness, a huge piece of land with numerous trails branching from the Colorado Trail.

Other good spots are the Collegiate Peaks, which boast numerous 14'ers, and the San Juan mountain range.

Check out backpacking books in the Penrose Library for more info or talk to any of our officers for good spots.
