February 2009

Winter in Colorado just doesn’t make sense if you’re not outside; make sure you’ve got what you want for the ourdoors and hit up the DU Alpine Club’s First Annual Gear Swap, this Wednesday the 18th from 6 to 9 pm. Our sponsors will be hooking you up with all their sick deals and our members will be selling and swapping their stuff with ya. Music, gear, and trip sign ups will be the foucs of the event…the trips?

First up: A starlit, evening snowshoeing. Don’t get the wrong idea; we’re not trying to woo you, but you might love DUAC even more after this trip. This Thursday the 19th, we’ll be playing in the powder of Berthoud Pass, make sure you’re in on the fun!

And next, get your blood pumping, your adrenaline flowing and your day pack ready; Saturday the 21st is our winter fourteener. Summit Quandary Peak with us and get the chance to ski or snowshoe down when we’re done. Right outside of Breckenridge, CO, this peak will give you a view you’ll never forget.

You know you’ve got a good few weeks ahead of you when that’s your schedule.

First up: February 13-15; Telluride/Ouray. Drive down with us Friday night, ski and climb Saturday and Sunday and try to get in on the 25 inches of fresh pow that’s fallen on the Durango area.

Then: Two day  trips, don’t try to pick just one. First, Feb. 19, a nighttime snowshoe, under the star filled Colorado sky. Add a quirk to your normal weekend and come along!! And to follow; Everyone knows Breck…do you know Quandary peak? Get familiar at 14,265 feet and climb this 14-er with us! This is not your average hike so take on a big challenge and see Colorado the way most people have to hop into a chopper to see.

And last but NOT AT ALL LEAST; Silverton. The reason you ride in places other than Wisconsin, probably the reason you came to DU; fresh, backcountry powder…GUIDED. This is one of two trips that are not open to all levels in the club and you’d best be ready to bring your A game to Silverton. Think challenging hikes for un-ridden runs, and Guides to show you the way…Sign ups are early, so if you want in, get on board THIS WEDNESDAY, the 11th at 8 pm in Sturm 281.

It’s not like you haven’t seen the promo everywhere; Winter Carnival is THIS WEEKEND!! The Alpine Club has a swanky house and a sick lift ticket hook-up through DUPB’s Winter Carnival. The two biggest organizations on campus, one outrageous weekend. The only thing you need to ask is WHY you haven’t been all over this. Your last chance to sign up is this Wednesday, the 4th of February at 8pm in Sturm 281. $130 for members, $150 for non members…cheapest ski weekend EVER!

Aaaand next? Sign yourself up for a ridiculous multi-sport weekend; Tear up Telluride, climb up Ouray and geeeeet down with the Alpine Club! We’re heading out on the afternoon of Friday the 13th (ooooh!) to climb and ski with GUIDES all weekend long…This isn’t really something you have to think about…get yo’soself to our Wednesday night meeting! $200 for members, $220 for non members….sick, sick deal

Don’t forget about our FIRST ANNUAL GEAR SWAP…Got extra gear? Need gear? Just a gear wh*re? Yea we all fit into at least one of those…It’ll be $5 to enter and sell your gear, $2 to enter and buy PLUS some of our super rad, way knowledgeable sponsors will be around to get you spankin new stuff at used prices. You can even get your skiis or snowboard waxed and ready for slopes. It’ll all be goin down February the 18th from 6 to 9 pm…You won’t be doing anything cooler on a Wednesday.
